Developer Tools Cheat Sheets
Editors, IDEs, version control, containers and everything else for writing code.
Chrome DevTools
Built into Chrome and Edge. Shortcuts are for Windows / Linux; on macOS Ctrl → ⌘ and Shift → ⌥ where shown.
Docker & Docker Compose
Image = a blueprint. Container = a running instance of an image. Volume = persistent data. Compose = several containers defined in one YAML file.
Git
Version control for your code. Working folder → git add → staging → git commit → local repo → git push → remote (GitHub).
GitHub & GitHub CLI
gh brings pull requests, issues, Actions and releases into your terminal. Install with winget install GitHub.cli, brew install gh or sudo apt install gh.
JetBrains IDEs
The same shortcuts work in every JetBrains IDE (default keymaps). If you can remember only one: Double Shift (Search Everywhere) and Alt + Enter (fix anything).
Markdown
Plain-text formatting used in READMEs, GitHub, Notion, Obsidian, Discord and docs sites. Extra features marked GFM work on GitHub (GitHub Flavored Markdown).
npm / pnpm / yarn
The three JavaScript package managers side by side. Yarn commands are for Yarn 2+ (Berry) unless marked v1. Enable pnpm/yarn with corepack enable.
pip & Python venv
Always use a virtual environment per project so packages don't clash. On Windows, py is the Python launcher. On Linux/macOS use python3.
Postman
Build, test and document API requests. Collection = a folder of saved requests. Environment = a set of variables (dev / prod). On macOS use ⌘ instead of Ctrl.
Visual Studio
Default "General / C#" keymap. A comma means press the combos one after another, for example Ctrl + K, Ctrl + D.
VS Code
Shortcuts for Windows / Linux. On macOS: Ctrl → ⌘, Alt → ⌥ (exceptions noted). Everything is searchable in the Command Palette, and you can change keys with Ctrl + K Ctrl + S.
